Concrete steps construction in Lafayette CA - a solid entry built to fit your home

Cracked, chipped or uneven front steps? We build new concrete steps that sit solid and fit the way into your house.

Concrete steps descend beside pale stone retaining walls into a landscaped yard with a curving gravel path.

What goes into building new concrete steps in Lafayette?

Concrete steps construction in Lafayette means replacing a worn or broken set of steps with new ones, either poured in place at your house or set as precast units, so you have a solid, even way up to your door.

Most people call us when their steps have started to chip, crack or sit unevenly, and the first decision is which kind of steps to build, because that choice moves the price more than anything else. The number of steps, how tall and wide they are and how much digging the ground needs all add to the cost, while groundwork and the permit steps are usually what move the schedule. Once I've seen your entry, you get a written estimate, and we go over your choices together.

We help you work out whether your steps go through the city, the county or both, and we handle the permit paperwork with you as part of the job. Concrete steps that are built well and given regular care last for decades, so it's worth getting the choice right the first time.

What happens when you call about new steps in Lafayette?

Thank you for thinking of us for your steps. We've been in business since 2023. Here is how it goes from the first call to the last look at the finished work.

I come out and measure your entry

I visit the house myself, take measurements and listen to what you have in mind before I write anything down. That way the estimate starts from your actual steps and not from a guess over the phone.

A written estimate and the permit steps

You get a written estimate, and we go over your choices and the permit steps together so nothing comes as a surprise later. We're fully licensed and insured.

On site with the crew through the final look

During the work I'm on site alongside our crew, so you always have one person to ask when a question comes up. We look over the finished steps with you before we call the job done. Your satisfaction, guaranteed.

Our concrete steps construction, poured or precast

I start by helping you decide between precast and poured, since precast is usually the lighter budget and poured can fit an entry of any shape. From there we break out the old steps, dig out and pack the ground the new ones will sit on, and then either set the precast units or build forms and pour. If the budget has to give somewhere, I'd rather it be the surface finish than the base, because the base is buried on the first day and it's what keeps steps from settling with the dirt and pulling away from the house.

Steps often meet other concrete work, so it helps to plan them together. If you're building a new house or an addition, we can plan the entry alongside slab foundation building or foundation installation, so the steps and the house go in as one plan.

  • Breaking out and hauling away the old steps
  • Digging out and packing the base the new steps sit on
  • Wooden forms and rebar, the steel that holds the concrete together, for steps poured in place
  • Setting precast units level and square to your door
  • A broom finish on the treads, a light texture that gives your shoes some grip, and cleanup when we're done

How we build your steps

Every set of steps goes through the same four stages, whether it's poured or precast, and I explain each one before we start it.

  1. Lay out the entry

We mark where the steps will run and check which way water will drain off them, because steps that shed water toward the house cause trouble at the door later.

  2. Clear and prepare the ground

We remove the old steps, dig out and pack the base in layers so the new steps don't sink over time. Any extra digging the ground calls for happens here, and it's one of the things that can add time and cost to a job.

  3. Pour the steps or set the precast

For poured steps we build forms in the shape of your entry, tie the rebar inside them and plan the pour for the cooler part of the day, since concrete placed in midday heat can end up with a weak, dusty top. For precast, this is where we set the units on the prepared base.

  4. Finish and clean up

We finish the treads and edges by hand so they're even underfoot. Then we strip the forms and clear away the debris.

Questions about concrete steps in Lafayette

How much do concrete steps cost in Lafayette?

Across the US, poured concrete steps usually cost about $200 to $500 per step, which is a national figure and not our price. Framing and rebar or mesh are typically part of the material cost for poured steps, while precast steps cost less because they're hollow and easier to put together, and their price depends on their height and width. Digging and groundwork can add to either, so your Lafayette figure comes from the written estimate after I see your entry.

Will my new concrete steps crack like the old ones did?

Concrete can crack, and I'd rather tell you that plainly than promise otherwise. What keeps cracks in check is mostly the work you can't see once the steps are in, which is why we put our time into the base and the steel.

Who issues building permits for concrete steps in Lafayette?

Contra Costa County issues building permits for Lafayette, and the county says almost all projects need one. Its list names new structures, repairs and decks but doesn't name concrete steps, so the county is the place to ask about yours, and I'd rather ask early than guess.

Does a contractor need a license to build concrete steps in California?

A contractor needs a state license when the job needs a building permit, uses additional workers, or costs $1,000 or more in labor and materials. California's Contractors State License Board describes a concrete contractor as one who forms, pours, places, finishes and installs concrete, so you can ask any contractor whether their license covers that work.

Building steps in Lafayette and nearby

The City of Lafayette lists an online zoning plan check with its Planning Department as the first stage, so that's where we start before anything goes to the county. If your steps sit near the street, or we'll need to keep materials and equipment there, the city requires an Encroachment Permit for any work within its right-of-way, the public land along the road, which on most residential streets reaches some distance in from the center of the road. If your house is in the city's Hillside Overlay District, the city also requires a Hillside Development Permit for development there, so we check whether your steps fall under it.

We're based in Lafayette and work throughout the East Bay, in Lafayette and many of the cities around it, including Orinda, Moraga and Walnut Creek. We see a lot of houses on slopes, with front walks that climb from the street to the door and older steps that have chipped or shifted over the years, and we build new steps the same careful way in each of these cities.
