Concrete pool decks in Lafayette CA - sure footing when wet, easy on bare feet

Cracked, slippery or pulling away at the pool edge? We build decks that grip when wet and send water where it should go.

A large light-gray concrete pool deck surrounds a rectangular swimming pool, with lounge chairs and a white house beyond.

What goes into a new pool deck in Lafayette?

A concrete pool deck is the flat concrete we form, pour and finish around your pool in Lafayette. Because it will be wet and walked on barefoot, the grip of the surface and where the water drains shape the whole job.

Most people call us when the deck around their pool has cracked, started chipping, gone slick underfoot or begun to push up the coping, the stone or concrete cap along the pool's rim. The first choice is whether your existing slab is sound enough to resurface or should come out and be poured new, and I'll tell you plainly which I'd pick once I've seen it.

The price moves mostly with the size of the deck, whether the old concrete has to be broken out and hauled away, how much digging the ground needs and the finish you choose, since decorative work costs more than a plain textured surface. The schedule turns on whether permits are needed, on the weather and on curing, the days fresh concrete needs to gain strength before you use it. The written estimate I give you after my visit puts a figure on your deck.

What happens after you call about a pool deck

Thank you for considering us. I started this business in Lafayette in 2023 after years on concrete crews, and I come out to look at each job myself. Here is how it goes from your first call.

I come out and measure the deck myself

I look at the deck in person, take measurements and listen to what you want from the space before I write anything down. That way your estimate is built on your yard, not a guess over the phone.

A written estimate with the permit steps laid out

You get the estimate in writing, and we go over your finish choices, the drainage and the permit steps together. Nothing about the plan should come as a surprise once we start.

On site with our crew, then a walk-through with you

During the work I'm on site alongside our crew, and we look over the finished deck with you before we call it done. The state licensing board counts forming, pouring and finishing flat concrete as a concrete contractor's work. We're fully licensed and insured. Your satisfaction, guaranteed.

How we build a concrete pool deck

Before we start, I show you which way the deck water will run, away from the house and without carrying dirty runoff into the pool, because a slab that drains the wrong way is hard to fix later. We dig out and pack the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, and set rebar, the steel that holds the slab together if it does crack. We choose the finish for grip when wet and comfort under bare feet before we think about looks, and we build a flexible joint where the deck meets the coping, since a deck that pushes against the pool's edge can knock coping loose and crack the tile at the waterline. If the budget gets tight, I'd rather you spend it on the ground underneath than on a fancier surface, because a good slab can be refinished later and a bad base can only be torn out.

A pool deck often ties into other work around the yard. If the deck meets a back door or a lower part of the yard, we build concrete steps to match it, and if you're adding a pool house or an equipment shed, its floor is a slab foundation we can plan alongside the deck.

  • Breaking out and hauling away an old deck that can't be saved
  • Digging out and packing the base under the new slab
  • Sloping the deck so water runs away from the house and the pool
  • A finish chosen for wet grip and bare feet
  • A flexible joint at the coping and cut joints across the deck

How the work goes, start to finish

These are the stages on the days we're working, so you know what you'll see in your backyard.

  1. Protect the pool and the yard

We cover the pool and set out a path for wheelbarrows and equipment, because concrete dust and splatter are far easier to keep out of the water than to clean out of it.

  2. Set the forms to the slope

We set the forms, the boards that hold the wet concrete in shape, to the slope we showed you. We check them again before the pour, since the forms decide where the water goes.

  3. Pour and finish away from midday heat

We plan the pour for the cooler part of the day when we can, because concrete that dries too fast in the sun can end up with a weak, dusty top. The finish goes on while the concrete is still workable.

  4. Cut the joints and let it cure

We cut control joints, shallow grooves that give the slab a planned place to crack, soon after the pour so any cracks follow lines we chose. Then the deck needs its curing time, so please keep chairs and foot traffic off until we tell you it's ready.

Pool deck questions we hear in Lafayette

How much does a concrete pool deck cost in Lafayette?

A concrete pool deck in the San Francisco area usually costs about $6 to $15 per square foot. That's the market's range for the deck itself, not our price, so take it as a rough guide. Your estimate after I've measured gives you the figure for your own yard.

What is the least slippery and coolest finish for a pool deck?

The best choice is a textured finish that isn't very dark, because finishes differ in how much grip they give wet feet and how hot they get, and very dark ones can get uncomfortable in the sun. Broom, textured, exposed aggregate, coated, overlay and decorative finishes all vary on both counts, so pick for grip and heat first and looks second. We'll go over the options for your deck at the estimate.

Can my old concrete pool deck be resurfaced instead of replaced?

Often it can, if the old concrete is a good candidate for it. Resurfacing with a concrete coating is a cost-effective way to refresh a deck and fix its surface flaws, but a coating can't save a slab that's sinking or broken through. I look at the deck first and tell you honestly which way I'd go.

Do I need a grading permit for a pool deck in Lafayette?

You need the city's Grading Permit if the job moves more than 50 cubic yards of soil, and the city counts that as the cut plus the fill added together. Its review looks at drainage, erosion and natural features such as creeks, trees and swales, the shallow channels water follows across a lot. We'll work out the amount of digging with you during the estimate.

What Lafayette's rules mean for your pool deck

If your deck needs a building permit, Contra Costa County Building Inspection does the inspections for Lafayette, so a job here can go through both the city and the county. We help you work out which offices your project goes through and handle the permit paperwork with you as part of the job.

Two other city rules can come up on a pool deck. Any work, or storage of materials and equipment, in the city's right-of-way, the public strip along the street, needs an Encroachment Permit, which matters when materials or a bin have to sit by the curb. If your lot backs onto a creek, you need a creek setback determination from the city before planning work, because city code bars structures inside the setback area. You can check both with the city's engineering permits office, and I'd ask about the creek before we settle on a layout.
